The Laurelbrook Seventh-day Adventist Church service on February 2, 2019 began with Rich Sutton welcoming everyone and making a few announcements. There is a potluck in the cafeteria after the service.
Jeremy Westcott played an introit. Charles Sarr had the invocation and then sang “The Lord in Zion Reigneth”. Rich Sutton had the main prayer; the congregation responded with “Hear Our Prayer, O Lord”.
Mark (junior) then called for the offering. Sebastian Roy-Lavallee and Felix (junior) then collected the morning offerings; the loose offering went to the local church budget. The congregation sang the doxology, and Mark prayed for the offering.
Rebecca Nowdesha told the children a story about an older person named Mr. Fry, who lived across from the Sparks family. Mr. Fry had a special watch, an old-fashioned pocket watch. He cared for it tenderly. But one day the watch disappeared. He looked everywhere, but the watch was gone. The son of the Sparkles suggested that Mr. Fry try prayer. At first, he rejected the idea but later prayed about the watch. In a dream, he saw the watch under a bush right by the road. Next day he found the watch and realized that he was beginning to know God. Jesus wants you to pray about your concerns.
Haydee (junior) and Eldric (sophomore) sang “Amazing Grace”, accompanied by Jeremy Westcott on the piano. Gustavo (junior) then read Luke 17:26 “And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.”
Charles Sarr discussed the topic “The Right Reason”. The congregation sang “If You But Trust in God to Guide You”. Charles Sarr had the closing prayer.

Following are some notes on the sermon by Charles Sarr:
- One of the best ways I’ve found to get something across to my students is to play a game with them (opposites game).
- We believe Jesus is coming soon, a truth we have heard for a long time.
- Luke 17:26 “And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.”
- In the days of Noah, people wore robes, growing stuff, growing animals, and growing cities, act as craftsmen, building houses.
- Adam was much taller and probably took off for town walking about 50-60 mph.
- Adam was middle age at about 600 years old.
- Perhaps some technologies back then are not even thought of today. Probably there was flight back then and even space flight (source: stories passed down through the generations).
- The earth was covered with people, probably eight billion, the same population as today.
- Math is the art of expressing the world God created in numbers.
- Noah’s world was very similar to the world today.
- Genesis 6:5 “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every imagination of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually.”
- Noah’s world was evil continuously with all sorts of crimes constantly being committed.
- We don’t see this much crime constantly.
- The opposite of evil is good – what Jesus would do – love.
- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 “4 ¶ Charity suffereth long, [and] is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.”
- Another word for “love” might be “unselflessness”. “Love” then is a person acting “unselfishly”.
- Evil is selfishness.
- Genesis 6:5 says that all people were selfish, and every thought was selfish. Today and in Noah’s world this was true.
- The opposite of love is evil.
- Adam’s sin was selfishness, not the fruit. Ellen White says that Godhead went into executive session to solve the problem. All three concentrated on how to take care of the problem with Jesus finally becoming a human.
- The motivation for our actions has to be unselfishness, not for what we can get out of the situation personally (this would be selfishness).
- Pray to God to give you the proper reason for what good you presently doing.
- Obedience and compliance outwardly look the same, but obedience is the choice to do something for the right reason.
- When reading Scripture, substitute good words for words mentioning evil.
- We can only do our actions for the right reasons if God helps us.
- Ezekiel 26:26-27 “26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do [them].”
- God has promised to put the Spirit of light and truth in us so we can act for the right reason.
- Romans 1:17 “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
- Romans 4:3 “For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.”
- Psalm 51:1-12 “1 ¶ « To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. » Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin [is] ever before me. 4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done [this] evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, [and] be clear when thou judgest. 5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden [part] thou shalt make me to know wisdom. 7 ¶ Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; [that] the bones [which] thou hast broken may rejoice. 9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me [with thy] free spirit.”
