Laurelbrook’s church service on November 23, 2019 began with a welcome by Robert D. Zollinger.
Felix (senior) played a musical introduction to the service. Mark Quion, a student from Weimar College, in California had the invocation. The congregation sang “Near to the Heart of God”. Robert D. Zollinger had the Morning Prayer; the congregation sang “Hear Our Prayer, O Lord”.
Robert D. Zollinger announced the time for the church offerings. Daryen (senior) and Eldric (junior) collected the tithes and offerings. Any money not designated for a particular purpose went toward the church’s program of Christian education. The congregation sang “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow”. Robert D. Zollinger prayed for the offerings.
Danella Taylor from Thrive Ministry in Kentucky told the children a story from Guyana. There was a deep river, in parts 60 feet deep. She had a bucket used for bathing in the river. When you washing your clothes, how many steps you had to navigate depended on the river flow. One day she slipped on the steps, her flip flops floated one way and her bucket another way. Because of the presence of man-eating fish, she didn’t risk her toes to retrieve the bucket.
Daniel (sophomore) and Leilani (senior) played a piano duet for special music. Eldric (junior) read the scripture reading – “15 And the princes of Issachar [were] with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben [there were] great thoughts of heart. 16 Why abodest thou among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben [there were] great searchings of heart.”
Mark Quion from Weimar College had the sermon. A student from Weimar sang a vocal solo for special music. Mark Quion had a word of prayer. The congregation sang “He Lives”. The Weimar student who sang for special music had the closing prayer.

Following are some notes on the sermon:
- Some people have such a distorted vision of God that they cannot come close to God.
- Judges 6:1 “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.”
- Gideon was asking where God was.
- Judges 6:12-13 “12 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD [is] with thee, thou mighty man of valour. 13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where [be] all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.”
- Often we wonder where God’s power is when we need it.
- The Lord’s reply to Gideon’s questioning – Judges 6:14 “And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?”
- The Lord says that when we have questions know that the Lord is ready to give us the power to fix the problem.
- God tells Gideon to take down his father’s idol and erect and altar to God.
- Judges 6:29-31 “29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing. 30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that [was] by it. 31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst [it is yet] morning: if he [be] a god, let him plead for himself, because [one] hath cast down his altar.”
- Judges 6:32 “Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.”
- In the process, God changes Gideon’s public image. Notice that the first thing God got Gideon to do was to take Midian’s god out of the hearts of the children of Israel.
- The men who had challenged Gideon’s idol destruction were the first to volunteer to fight the Midianites.
- Morning devotions should be the time to take the idols out of our lives.
- It is important to stay close to Jesus and read carefully the Bible so we can stay close to Jesus.
- Judges 6:8 “That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;”
- God explained who He was before He asks for complete devotion to Him.
- 1 Kings 12:28 “Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves [of] gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.”
- The world wants to have you follow it to find happiness in its solutions.
- “A true knowledge of God” is the foundation of true education.
- Whatever the problems in our lives God pulls us out of the bondages we are in.
