Services in the Laurelbrook Seventh-day Adventist Church on July 20, 2019 began with a song service led by Maria (senior) and Lindsey (junior) accompanied on the piano by Freddy (freshman). The opening song was “Nearer, My God, to Thee”, accompanied on the piano by Leilani (senior).
Bubba Herra welcomed everyone. Iram (senior) had prayer and read the scripture reading – Psalm 33:22 “Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.”
Daryen (senior) read a mission story about a church building of another denomination that was given to the Seventh-day Adventist Church after its pastor and many of its members became Adventists.
Daryen then called for the Laurelbrook Missions Offering, which was collected by Michael (senior) and Heisler (sophomore). Bubba and Jennifer Herra then sang “In Christ Alone” as a vocal duet for special music.
Bubba Herra had the theme talk, which was on hope. Bubba Herra then had the closing prayer and announced the classes. Students met behind the glass for their Sabbath School class with Ruan Swanepoel as their teacher. Rodney Herra taught the Sabbath School class in the church sanctuary.
Following are a few notes on the theme talk:
- We hope for many things.
- Bubba’s physical therapy patients many times feel that their injuries wipe out their hopes. On the other hand, another group are happy about life. They have their hope in God.
- “Hope” is “trust and reliance”.
- Psalm 33:18-22 “18 Behold, the eye of the LORD [is] upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy; 19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he [is] our help and our shield. 21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name. 22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.”
- Our hope should be in Christ’s unfailing love, which will help shield us.
- Psalm 146:1-10 “1 ¶ Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul. 2 While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being. 3 Put not your trust in princes, [nor] in the son of man, in whom [there is] no help. 4 His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish. 5 ¶ Happy [is he] that [hath] the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope [is] in the LORD his God: 6 Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein [is]: which keepeth truth for ever: 7 Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners: 8 The LORD openeth [the eyes of] the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous: 9 The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down. 10 The LORD shall reign for ever, [even] thy God, O Zion, unto all generations. Praise ye the LORD.”
- God supplies us with all our needs and relieves all our problems.
- Romans 15:13 “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.”
